I offer teaching to one or two people at a time at my workshop in Heswall on The Wirral. Please email me at joburtonwoodcarver@gmail.com for further information. Learning woodcarving takes time but the number of sessions and content covered can be catered to meet individual need. Five 2 hour sessions is the usual length of a beginners course or a two day weekend. Alternatively a single two hour taster session is available.
I teach the use of traditional techniques using hand chisels, no machinery is used for the carving. Chisels and equipment for carving are available for use in my workshop. Kiln dried lime wood for the first small carving is provided. Kiln dried lime wood for further projects or larger first carvings can be bought at cost price if in stock or students may source their own kiln dried wood
Teaching will cover the safe use of chisels, types of chisels, sharpening chisels, choice of suitable wood, carving technique and finishing, along with practical experience of carving.
Students without experience usually start with a simple piece of relief carving to learn basic techniques and safe practices. If they continue they will then be encouraged to choose their own project, with a little guidance, so that their work reflects their interests and experience.
A single session of two hours is £35 per person. A short course of five two hour sessions is £150 per person.
Sessions can be booked by emailing me at joburtonwoodcarver@gmail.com or a gift voucher can be bought and dates and times arranged later.
